The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Follows Lukewarm Reception

Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure notified team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had shown the need for a distinct direction.

The president stated that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Hires

This announcement follows a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the entire text from the president's announcement:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”

Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was informative. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the need for a more distinct vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the criticism to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our fans.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of 31st Union. Following some time of discussions, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.

His leadership and background in the competitive gaming field is vast, having dedicated the recent years producing and managing some of the most popular titles in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in welcoming Ben soon. We are all excited to persist witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the time to come.

Title Details and Vision

The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 in conjunction with a public demo. Then, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Challenge the competition with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that shift every round. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, put it on the line, and pray your squad can achieve the highest spot? The decision is yours."

Project Ethos does not have an confirmed debut schedule or platforms, but fans can expect further news as production progresses.
