Suspected Harasser Inquired: 'But Suppose I Am Madeleine?'
A female indicted with stalking Kate McCann reportedly deposited her a voicemail message which asked: "what if I am Madeleine?"
Julia Wandelt, twenty-four, who a jury heard has persistently asserted she was the disappeared Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are standing trial charged with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February the current year.
On Monday, the court was told communication data and data recovered from phones recorded Ms Wandelt repeatedly requesting Madeleine's mother for a DNA test throughout the past two years.
Madeleine's case in 2007 - at the age of three during a family holiday in Portugal - is one of the most publicized missing child cases and continues to be unsolved.
'I Am Not Seeking Money'
Another phone message, played in court, recorded Ms Wandelt stating: "I realize I'm fat and unattractive like Madeleine was, but I know what I know."
While another instance of Ms Wandelt's one-way conversations with Mrs McCann's answerphone said: "What if there is a slight possibility that I am she? What happens next? Isn't that crucial for you?"
"I don't want money, I possess a living here in Poland, I only wish to discover," the recording stated.
The tribunal was advised that via emails, SMS messages and communications, Ms Wandelt demanded a biological test, transmitted youth pictures to her phone in a bid to demonstrate a similarity to Mrs McCann's disappeared daughter, and asserted to have "flashbacks" from a childhood with the McCanns.
An intelligence analyst, an investigator with law enforcement who compiled the evidence, advised the court there "showed no any replies" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt also reached out to family friends of the McCanns, as per the communication logs.
On 9 October 2024, Gerry McCann responded to a communication from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, declaring she had "a wrong number."
That day Ms Wandelt deposited a message on Mrs McCann's voicemail declaring "I will continue and I plan to establish my position."
The court heard the co-defendant struck up a association online with Ms Wandelt prior to accompanying her on a appearance to the McCanns' home in the county in last December.
Phone records showed Mrs Spragg had contacted using communication app to Mrs McCann to express the media had depicted Ms Wandelt as "mentally unstable" but that she should be treated respectfully in the period preceding the appearance to the village, Leicestershire, in last December.
The court learned message exchanges between the two accused, in November 2024, discussing attempting to acquire Mrs McCann's genetic material from her garbage or from silverware at a restaurant.
"We have to assert ourselves," Mrs Spragg told Ms Wandelt.
On the occasion of the trip to their house, Mrs Spragg dispatched a communication which expressed: "We find ourselves positioned adjacent to the McCanns' house with our vehicle dark resembling detectives. I wanted to achieve this with someone else I hadn't anticipated I would be engaged in this with the McCanns."
The proceedings continues.
