Gas Detonation Costs Three Police Officers During Eviction Action in Italy
A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen others sustained injuries in what appears to be intentional gas explosion at a rural property in Italy's north.
Sequence of Events
The blast took place as police and firefighters approached the property close to Verona to carry out an removal notice for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
All three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.
Investigation Developments
A man and a woman got detained at the site and a third person who escaped following the explosion was found soon after. The trio have been admitted to the hospital.
The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene revealed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.
Background and Motive
The president of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the residence was subject to an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.
Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings caused the detonation.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander informed news outlets.
A propane tank had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our officers,” he said.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the interior minister stated.
Injuries and Destruction
Injured individuals by the explosion included eleven more officers of the police force as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.
The prosecutor believed the explosion had taken place on a level above the access point and stated to reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the propane tanks being activated”.
Local Response
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to local news, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
